31 August 2013 Saturday
Morning call 5 am. At 6 am, we were on the bus to Airport.
Oh no…. an accident blocked our drive to the airport highway.
Our driver had to make a detour….no one cursed the tour leader for the 5 am wake up call after the incident.
Arriving at the airport and our packed breakfast…
Our flight to Johannesburg.
Surprise landmark on the ground… wonder what are all the perfect circles !
Arrival and we had a City Tour around Soweto. Artistic Chimney of Soweto Power station.
The soil is yellow and little vegetation. There are many locals roaming the street. They sell all kinds of things by the road side…The local is selling a wall at this junction.
Our first stop was Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum. I learned about the story of Hector Pieterson (the family insists the correct words is Pieterson). This 13 years old student Hector Pieterson was shot dead in the seventies while protesting against teaching of Afrikaans only in school…. It served as wake up call …. And there are many black scholars who injected into the black community ideas of living with integrity. As I watched the video, I empathized with community who suffered under Apartheid.
The bus drove passed Nelson Mandela’s House. A glimpse of the better housing locals stays in. I say better housing because there were more run down estates seen.
The tour bus make a deliberate detour to World Cup Stadium.
Arrived at Gold Reef City. This is an Integrated Resort consists of Casino and Theme park. We visited the Casino but no gambling. A very interesting display of different generation of Jackpot machines.
We had lunch at Ocean Basket (Similar to Fish and Co in Singapore) before heading out to the theme park. The most popular Bunny.
Eskimo and Bunny
Lovely kids proud of the artwork on their face.
We had a Gold Mine Heritage Tour.
The lift send us down to 225 m below ground level.
This guide who speaks english and mandarin… demonstrate ways of gold mining.
We try out 4D theater and some rides.
Sit back, relax and have coffee after all the thrill.
The tour bus picked us up at 1630 hrs and when we arrive at Carnivores it was still very early.
The restaurant consists of a central fire place where they cook all kinds of meat.
The varieties they offer…
Tour members were ready…
Our dinner….
Very quickly, the entire restaurant were packed with people.
Our picture after meaty dinner.
After dinner, another long ride before we checked into Maslow Hotel. Pretty Class.
End of Day 3 : An eye opening visit to Soweto and Hector Pieterson Museum. A very good dinner where we taste varieties of meat.
