NZ South Island Day 7

10 October 2014 Friday.

This morning, we joined the Dragon cave and Glow Worm expedition. There were 4 of us in the group. We put on wet suit and were driven to cave site. Walking through an undulating terrain and forest with the tube.

The flow was relatively strong and rocky underneath.

Then it was little downhill slides….near the entrance of the glow worm cave.

Yes, we saw the glow worm cave … some hot chocolate before we exit from the cave.

It was early afternoon when we washed up and set off to Franz Josef Glacier.

Lunch at Fat Pipi Pizza Hokitika.

The pizza is yummy… on surface, the look was good… the crispy crust underneath was even better. Possibly the best pizza we had in the entire NZ trip.

After lunch, we explored the beach behind the Fat Pipi.

The beach out there is sandy and nice but empty. Locals gathered around the wet muddy area off the beach.

The boys really enjoyed themselves here. Very expressive and explained a lot about after school and having so much fun here.

The kids were building shelter. When penguins came out from the sea at night, these creature would stay in the shelter.

Hokitika is a lovely town. There are museums, art galleries, little shops dotted everywhere. It gave me a very comfortable feeling. How nice to spend an easy afternoon, sitting outside one of the cafe, sipping hot coffee and take in the cool breeze. Hokitika is not easy access but is definitely worthwhile to come by.

After a long stretch of coastal drive…. it was all inland road.

Approaching Franz Josef Galcier

Near the glacier, the green vegetation gave way to the glacier sand and gravel. < as ice move over the rock, it grind the rock into particulate sandstone of various dimension and deposit everywhere.>

Our Hotel…

End of Day 7 : We had great tubing and glow worm cave experience. I like the comfort of Hokitika…. very nice town. At Franz Josef Glacier town, it was light rain, cold wind with temperature around 5 deg C. We did not explore the town area. Had some cooked food in the hotel…and get ourselves ready for our Glacier Exploration.
